Dogs for Goat Owners

Which breed is for me?

There are two types of dogs that are beneficial to goat owners; livestock guardian dogs and herding dogs.

The most common livestock guardian dog is the Great Pyrenees. There are several other breeds including Analtonian, Maremma Sheepdogs, Kuvasz, and others. Each breed of dog has its own characteristics. They are large dogs that are bonded with the goats from birth and protect them. Some are bonded so strongly they even eat goat feed and let misplaced kids nurse. They are great protection for the flock against dogs, coyotes, big cats, and even man. The LDG links page also contain links that help you identify your preditor problem.

Herding dogs are to help the goat owner move and contain the goats. Most common herding dogs are the Border Collie and the Australian Shepherd. These dogs are a great asset to the goat owner & can save lots of hours work.

Before purchasing a dog for your flock take the time to do a little research and learn about the dogs. Learn what care and training are required. Be sure to purchase your dogs from a reputable breeder. A bargain dog can cost you more than you save! Be sure to read C&C Farms article about bargin dogs.

Check out our dogs, and research the links. I hope you enjoy your visit.
